Can I point my website to your IP Address?

While possible, we don’t recommend this.  If/when we upgrade our server infrastructure, our IP address may change.  If that happens, and you don’t update your DNS beforehand, then your website could go offline.

To avoid this from ever happening, we point your domain using a CNAME instead.  This is the most future-proof way to ensure your website will continue to point to our server and keep your site online.

What’s the difference between domain name and web hosting?

Your domain name, is the name of your website, shown in the address bar on your browser.  For example, Yourwebsite.com.  Domain names are registered with a company. Typically, that’s the same company where you purchased the domain name from. Common examples of companies that sell domain name registrations are Godaddy.com, Networksolutions.com, Tucows.com, and many others.

Web hosting is the service that is required to store your website and serve it to the general public. Essentially, this is where the files that make up your website “live”.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the name people see in the address bar at the very top of their web browser.  Typically, it’s the name of your restaurant .com. For example, www.yoursite.com.

What is DDoS attack?

A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic. DDoS attacks achieve effectiveness by utilizing multiple compromised computer systems as sources of attack traffic. Exploited machines can include computers and other networked resources such as IoT devices. From a high level, a DDoS attack is like an unexpected traffic jam clogging up the highway, preventing regular traffic from arriving at its destination.

What is a CDN?

A CDN (Content Delivery Network) is a highly-distributed platform of servers that helps minimize delays in loading web page content by reducing the physical distance between the server and the user. This helps users around the world view the same high-quality content without slow loading times. Without a CDN, content origin servers must respond to every single end user request. This results in significant traffic to the origin and subsequent load, thereby increasing the chances for origin failure if the traffic spikes are exceedingly high or if the load is persistent.

What is a WAF?

A WAF or Web Application Firewall helps protect web applications by filtering and monitoring HTTP traffic between a web application and the Internet. It typically protects web applications from attacks such as cross-site forgery, cross-site-scripting (XSS), file inclusion, and SQL injection, among others. A WAF is a protocol layer 7 defense (in the OSI model), and is not designed to defend against all types of attacks. This method of attack mitigation is usually part of a suite of tools which together create a holistic defense against a range of attack vectors.

VPS FAQ

What are the advantages of a VPS, compared to a dedicated server?

The advantage of a VPS is that you don’t have to worry about hardware management — so you would not need to monitor the status of hard disks, RAM, and CPU. They are adapted to host most types of web projects that are moderately sized. We recommend using a dedicated server if you want to manage the hardware aspects yourself, build more elaborate architectures, create an infrastructure that includes a private network (vRack), and deploy other complex solutions that are not web services. As a general rule, users with a growing volume of web activity either move up to dedicated servers, or Public Cloud solutions. These services offer more complex, flexible infrastructures that can adapt to a high level of growth.

What are the differences between VPS and Public Cloud solutions?

A VPS is a solution adapted for pre-production and production environments that don’t need constant performance. The Public Cloud offers a multi-server infrastructure, with high availability for servers.

How do I choose between a VPS and a web hosting plan?

Using a VPS is the next logical step up from using a web hosting plan. Virtual private servers offer a wider range of options, and more flexibility in terms of configuration, access and features (root access, Apache PHP.init). You can also install an SSL certificate and any other software you want. However, we would like to emphasize the importance of choosing the right VPS for you. A VPS needs to be configured in a way that suits your application requirements, and the growth of your business.

Can I host several websites on a VPS?

Yes. A VPS can be partitioned, and organized to suit your requirements. This means you can use it to host several websites or projects, by allocating a private space to each one. You choose the volume of each space, too. To simplify how you do this, you can install a web hosting control panel like Plesk or cPanel.

Who can use a VPS?

Using a VPS requires basic knowledge of server administration. It is essential for managing the operating system (Linux or Windows) installed on the machine, and configuring the applications.

What is a VPS, and what is it used for?

A virtual private server (VPS) is used for hosting websites (e-commerce, content, visual media) and software applications (portals, extranets, collaborative solutions, wikis, CRM). Unlike shared hosting, the data is isolated onto a virtual machine which is dedicated to the user. The VPS is a perfect compromise between web hosting plans and physical servers, combining reliability with the high performance of a dedicated server — but without the difficulty of managing a server's physical hardware.

VDS FAQ

Can one server have multiple IP addresses in a network?

Yes. In addition to the main IP in the network, you can also configure up to five alias IP addresses for every server. You will have to configure these IP addresses manually; the DHCP cannot provide them.

Are there size limits for volumes?

Volumes can be between 10 GB and 1TB.

What is the minor version for your Debian and Centos images?

We automatically update our images to be the latest minor version within two weeks after the release. That means that our existing Debian 9 image will always contain the latest Debian 9.X version within two weeks after its release.

What kind of connection do the instances have?

The host systems for our cloud instances all have a redundant 10 Gbits connection. This connection is shared by all instances on the host.

Can I install Windows on VDS?

You can install Windows manually on your own using an ISO image. We do not provide any support for Windows.

What is VDS?

A virtual dedicated server is a type of virtualization that enables a virtual server, which is a shared resource and not a dedicated server, to to work and act as if it were a dedicated server. Each VDS has its own disk space, bandwidth, CPU allocation, memory and operating system. Also called a virtual private server (VPR).

DEDICATED SERVERS FAQ

Will I have root access to my Dedicated Server?

Our Dedicated Servers served with root access, once your account and server are fully provisioned.

Is bandwidth usage unlimited?

With websiteroof, you get unlimited, non-metered traffic included as a standard. However, the network resources are shared between customers. Bandwidth has a fair usage rule (apart from users who have signed up to the guaranteed bandwidth option). To ensure optimal performance for all of our customers, websiteroof reserves the right to limit a service’s outgoing public bandwidth throughput by up to 50%, if it has a detrimental effect on network quality for other users.

How do I choose my datacenter?

With websiteroof, you select your datacenter. We advise choosing a datacenter that is as close as possible geographically to your main customer and user base.

What is the lifetime guarantee for components?

We don’t compromise on quality, so all of our server hardware is maintained 24/7. Our servers also hold a lifetime guarantee for components. In the event of a server component failing, websiteroof will replace it automatically for the entire duration of your contract. You will not be charged for these replacement operations.

Why is the anti-DDoS protection included as standard?

At websiteroof, anti-DDoS protection is a mandatory feature with all our solutions. It guarantees optimal security for your servers and infrastructures. It is vital, because:
  • an attack on your server will affect your business, which can result in reduced earnings, or an interruption in income
  • if access to your website is saturated, it could flood the common networks and affect other customers

What does the delivery time refer to?

The delivery time is the time it takes for your server to be provided to you. This time period starts once you have paid for your order. It is given as an estimate, and is not a contractual guarantee. Please note that we work hard to deliver products as quickly as possible.
